NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Geography Chapter 1 India – Size and Location

NCERT Solutions for Class 9 Geography Chapter 1 covers Latitudinal and Longitudinal Extent, India's Size, Standard Meridian, India and the World, and Neighboring Countries.

Overview of Topics & Subtopics (Click to Jump)

1. Location & Geographic Extent of India

Short Note:

• Hemisphere: India is lying entirely in the Northern and Eastern Hemispheres.

• Latitudinal Extent: 8°4'N and 37°6'N.

• Longitudinal Extent: 68°7'E and 97°25'E.

• Tropic of Cancer (23°30'N): Divides India into almost two equal parts, passing through 8 Indian states (Gujarat, Rajasthan, MP, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura, and Mizoram).

• Islands: Andaman and Nicobar Islands lie in the Bay of Bengal (southeast), while Lakshadweep Islands lie in the Arabian Sea (southwest).

2. Size, Boundaries & Standard Meridian

Short Note:

• Total Area: 3.28 million sq. km, accounting for ~2.4% of the world's total geographical area (7th largest country in the world).

• Land Boundary: About 15,200 km.

• Coastline: 7,516.6 km (including island groups).

• Standard Meridian (82°30'E): Passes through Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh and is taken as the Standard Time (IST) for the whole country to avoid time confusion across a 2-hour time lag between Gujarat and Arunachal Pradesh.

3. Strategic Position of India & Neighboring Countries

Short Note:

• Strategic Location: Central location between East and West Asia. Opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 reduced distance between India and Europe by 7,000 km.

• Neighbors: Bound by Pakistan and Afghanistan in North-West; China, Nepal, and Bhutan in North; Myanmar and Bangladesh in East; Sri Lanka and Maldives in South.

• Palk Strait & Gulf of Mannar: Narrow sea channels connecting India and Sri Lanka.

Intext & Conceptual Questions

Q1: Why is 82°30'E chosen as the Standard Meridian of India?
Answer:
1. Time Difference: The longitudinal extent of India is nearly 30°, causing a time lag of about 2 hours between Arunachal Pradesh (East) and Gujarat (West).
2. Uniformity: To maintain a single uniform standard time across all states, 82°30'E longitude passing through Mirzapur (UP) was selected as the Standard Meridian of India.
Q2: Why is the difference between duration of day and night hardly felt at Kanyakumari, but not so in Kashmir?
Answer:
1. Proximity to Equator: Kanyakumari is located very close to the Equator (8°4'N), where sun rays fall almost direct throughout the year, so day and night durations are almost equal.
2. Higher Latitude: Kashmir lies far north near 37°6'N latitude, away from the equator. Hence, the difference in daytime and night length is felt sharply there as the sun moves across seasons.

Textbook Chapter End Exercise Questions

Q1: Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
(i) The Tropic of Cancer does not pass through:
(a) Rajasthan   (b) Odisha   (c) Chhattisgarh   (d) Tripura
Answer: (b) Odisha

(ii) The easternmost longitude of India is:
(a) 97°25'E   (b) 68°7'E   (c) 77°6'E   (d) 82°32'E
Answer: (a) 97°25'E

(iii) Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim have common frontiers with:
(a) China   (b) Bhutan   (c) Nepal   (d) Myanmar
Answer: (c) Nepal

(iv) If you intend to visit Kavaratti during your summer vacations, which Union Territory of India will you be visiting?
(a) Puducherry   (b) Lakshadweep   (c) Andaman & Nicobar   (d) Daman & Diu
Answer: (b) Lakshadweep
Q2: The sun rises two hours earlier in Arunachal Pradesh as compared to Gujarat in the west but the watches show the same time. How does this happen?
Answer:
1. India spans nearly 30° of longitude between East and West.
2. The sun takes 4 minutes to cross 1 degree of longitude ($30 \times 4 = 120 \text{ minutes} = 2 \text{ hours}$). Thus, sunrise happens 2 hours earlier in Arunachal Pradesh.
3. However, all clocks in India follow Indian Standard Time (IST), based on the central Standard Meridian longitude of 82°30'E. Therefore, watches display the exact same time nationwide regardless of local sunrise.
Q3: The central location of India at the head of the Indian Ocean is considered of great significance. Why?
Answer:
1. Strategic Trade Routes: Trans-Indian Ocean routes connect the industrial nations of Europe in the west with eastern Asian economies.
2. Long Coastline: India has the longest coastline in the Indian Ocean, giving it major control over maritime trade and defense.
3. Cultural Exchange: Ancient sea and land routes helped spread Indian philosophy (Upanishads, Ramayana) and goods (spices, muslin) worldwide.
